Understanding Breast Cancer Screening Guidelines: Early Detection Saves Lives

Advances in breast cancer screening technology have made it possible to detect cancer early.  Understanding current breast imaging guidelines can help individuals make informed decisions about their health.

For women at average risk, many organizations such as the American College of Radiology recommend beginning regular mammograms around age 40, although the exact starting age and frequency of screening may vary depending on individual circumstances. Women should discuss their personal risk factors with their healthcare provider to determine the screening schedule that is most appropriate for them.

Some individuals have a higher risk of developing breast cancer due to factors such as a family history and genetic mutations like BRCA1 or BRCA2. These individuals may benefit from starting screening earlier and may require additional imaging, such as breast MRI, alongside mammography.

While screening cannot prevent breast cancer, it can significantly improve the chances of successful treatment by identifying cancer before symptoms develop. By understanding your personal risk factors and having regular conversations with your healthcare provider, you can support your breast health.

Currently, NPREMA helps connect individuals across New York City, Westchester County and Long Island to free and low-cost breast cancer screening resources. See our resources for more information on a location near you.
