Quick Lane Bowl Prediction: New Mexico State and Bowling Green Face Off in the Motor CityBoth teams looking for first winning season in more than five years. In what is one of the more unexpected postseason matchups, New Mexico State and Bowling Green will meet in the Quick Lane Bowl in Detroit on Monday. Neither team was projected to go bowling after combining for a 6-18 record in 2021, but both the Aggies and Falcons defied preseason expectations by going 6-6. On the ground, six different players have logged 26 or more carries this season, including both quarterbacks. Star Thomas leads the team with 472 rushing yards but Pavia is right behind with 443. He and Jamoni Jones are tied with six rushing touchdowns. NSMU also is more likely to score on the ground (24 total) than through the air (16) given the team's issues in the passing game. That's further emphasized by the fact that the leading receiver on the team has 19 receptions with Justice Powers, Kordell David and Jonathan Brady all tied in that category. The good news for the Aggies is that they should be able to have some success moving the ball. That also was the last time NMSU posted a winning record. The Aggies had gone 8-30 in the four previous seasons before breaking through in 2022. On the other side, Bowling Green is snapping an even longer postseason drought. The Falcons rode a non-conference home win over Marshall and a strong showing in MAC play (5-3 conference record) to earn their first bowl invite since the 2015 season when they won the conference championship and went 10-4, finishing with a loss to Georgia Southern in the GoDaddy. BGSU Football vs New Mexico State The school applied for a waiver from the NCAA to be eligible for a bowl game despite a 5-6 record. Given the unusual circumstances (a lack of bowl-eligible teams based on record may have contributed as well), the NCAA approved the waiver. NMSU played FCS Valparaiso on Dec. 3 (and won 65-3) but that was a mere formality. Now the Aggies are in their first bowl game since the 2017 season when they defeated Utah State in the Arizona Bowl. BGSU relies more on its aerial attack as senior quarterback Matt McDonald took a huge step forward in his third season as the starter. He's completing 61. 3 percent of his passes for 2, 639 yards with 22 touchdowns and eight interceptions. That's throwing as many scoring strikes as picks (13 each) in his previous two seasons (17 games) combined. McDonald's favorite target is Odieu Hiliare who has put together a breakout campaign (54 rec., 704 yds., 6 TDs) that culminated with him being named second-team All-MAC. N. Fellow wide receiver Tyrone Broden (30, 473, 6) has been a reliable target as has tight end Christian Sims (41, 402, 2). Five other Falcons have posted 10-plus catches with at least one touchdown, showing that McDonald isn't afraid to spread the ball around. And he's needed to when you factor in Bowling Green's inability to run the ball with any consistency. Jaison Patterson leads the team with 560 yards but he's averaging 4. 3 yards per carry and has one rushing touchdown. As a team, the Falcons are barely breaking the century mark per game and have a total of eight touchdowns on the ground. It will be interesting to see how New Mexico State's defense does against Bowling Green's passing attack. The Aggies have fared pretty well against the pass this season, giving up 13 touchdowns compared to six interceptions but didn't face many prolific aerial attacks on its schedule. 5BGSU +465Nov 10thKNTL 6-40+2. 5 LU 56KNT +112Nov 2ndWMUW 13-9-5 LU 48BGSU -217Oct 22nd@CMCHW 34-18+6. 5 WO 50. 5BGSU +188N. The Falcons enter this game ranked 58th in passing yards per game. One potential equalizer could be the Aggies' ability to bring pressure. They recorded 27 sacks in the regular season while Bowling Green surrendered 36. Two of the Aggies' wins came against FCS programs and only one of those can count towards the six needed for bowl eligibility. But their scheduled Oct. 22 home game against San Jose State was initially postponed and later canceled due to the death of a Spartans player. The Independent Aggies tried to schedule an 11th game against an FBS opponent during both their open date and also championship weekend but were unsuccessful. Bowling Green finished near the bottom of the MAC in both scoring (33. 3 ppg, 11th) and total (420. 7 ypg, 10th) during the regular season. The Falcons were particularly vulnerable through the air (27 TDs, 9 INTs) but they also are giving up plenty of ground (163 rushing ypg, 21 TDs). One defender NMSU better account for is lineman Karl Brooks, the first-team All-MAC honoree who enters this game with 10 sacks and 18 tackles for a loss (third in the conference in both categories).
